PROBLEM WITH FLYING INSECTS? CALL US TODAY
What are Electric Fly Killers?
Electric fly killers (EFKs) are widely used across the UK in both domestic and commercial settings to control flying insect activity, particularly in food preparation and storage areas.
They work by attracting flies with UV light and either zapping them with an electric grid or trapping them on a sticky board. Correct placement, unit type and regular maintenance is essential so they remain safe and effective.
In commercial premises, particularly those in the food and hospitality industries, EFKs support compliance with hygiene standards under the Food Safety Act 1990 and HACCP regulations.
EFKs are important in monitoring and control of not only flies, but other other flying insects such as moths, beetles and wasps.

How to Install and Maintain Electric Fly Killers
Proper installation and regular upkeep are key to the effectiveness of EFK units.
Best practices include:
- Install the correct EFK type. Glueboard units are usually required above food preparation areas. Units should be a suitable size for the area.
- Placing them 1.8 to 2 metres above the ground puts them in the optimal attraction zone, and avoids creating a working at height risk.
- Keeping units away from where children and animals may be able to reach them.
- Regulally change UV bulbs, as their UV output fades over time.
- Cleaning, replacing glue boards regularly, removal dead flies to keep them effective, and avoid creating a fire risk.
Maintaining the EFK is only half the job. A professional controller can carry out a fly catch analysis. Understanding what species are found on site, what risks they present, and where the sources of the flies might be. A proposal can then be produced as to what housekeeping and proofing may be required to reduce the fly numbers.

Problems Caused by Poor EFK Maintenance
Failing to install or maintain electric fly killers properly can lead to reduced efficiency and hygiene risks.
Potential issues include:
- Build-up of dead insects inside the unit, creating odours and fire risks
- UV lamps losing effectiveness and failing to attract flies
- Glue boards becoming full or ineffective over time
- Fly activity continuing or worsening due to poor placement
- Non-compliance with food safety audits or inspections
Routine servicing helps avoid breakdowns, ensures regulatory compliance, and keeps flying insects under control.

We contacted The Pest Company on a day when we first saw wasps in our soffits/roof and they were really friendly and efficient. A couple of days later they were at our house and dealt with the issue. However, as we were out on the day they came they couldn't have access to any interior areas. This long 'story' is basically to say that, when we noticed that there was still an issue and told them, they were equally as quick, efficient and professional as before and sorted the interior issue extremely quickly. We couldn't praise and thank them enough. Connor (who was their representative) was an extremely polite, efficient and knowledgeable guy and he, 100%, sorted things for us quickly. Again, we can't thank and praise him enough.Posted on Google![]()

Frequently asked questions
How do electric fly killers work?
Electric fly killers (EFKs) use UV light to attract flying insects such as flies. Once attracted, insects are either electrocuted by an electric grid or trapped on a sticky board, depending on the unit type.
Where should an electric fly killer be installed for maximum effectiveness?
For best results, EFKs should be installed away from windows and doors to avoid attracting more flies inside, positioned 1.5 to 2 metres above the ground, and placed away from direct contact with food or preparation areas.
How often should I replace the UV bulbs in an electric fly killer?
UV bulbs should typically be replaced every 12 months or when specified by the manufacturer. Over time, UV output fades, reducing the unit’s ability to attract flies effectively.
How often should glue boards or grids be cleaned or replaced?
Glue boards should be checked and replaced regularly—typically every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on extent of flying insect. Electric grids should be cleaned frequently to remove dead insects and maintain efficiency.
Why is regular maintenance of electric fly killers important?
Regular servicing prevents reduced efficiency, ensures compliance with food safety regulations, and avoids hygiene and fire risks caused by dead insect build-up. Poorly maintained units may fail to control fly activity effectively.
