What Kind of Flies Are a Problem?
There are around 7,000 species of true flies in the UK. Flies are a common pest in the UK. Most cause no issues to people, but a few can cause concern.
The most common flies we deal with include species such as the House Fly (Musca domestica), Bluebottle (Calliphora vomitoria), Common Cluster Flies (Pollenia rudis), Drain Fly (Drosophila melanogaster) and Fruit Fly (Drosophila spp.) frequently causing problems in homes, businesses, and outdoor areas.
They are attracted to food waste, organic matter, and decaying material. Flies breed rapidly, especially in warm conditions, and their presence can quickly escalate from a minor nuisance to a serious hygiene concern.
In domestic settings, fly control is not a legal requirement. However, particularly those in the food industry, businesses are legally obliged to prevent fly infestations and maintain hygienic premises.
Understanding the species of fly causing the issue and its biology, are vital to achieving control.

Damage Caused by Flies
Flies are known to carry and spread bacteria, making them a risk to public health and food safety.
The impact of a fly infestation can include:
- Contamination of food and surfaces
- Spread of diseases such as Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria
- Damage to business reputation and hygiene ratings
- Increased risk in sensitive environments such as hospitals or care homes
- Loss of stock due to spoilage or infestation
Because flies reproduce quickly, prompt action is important to prevent a small issue from becoming a widespread problem.

How to Get Rid of Flies
Controlling flies involves removing attractants and applying targeted species specific treatments where necessary.
Common control methods include:
- Keeping food waste sealed and bins clean
- Installing fly screens or air curtains on doors and windows
- Using UV light traps or electric fly killers in commercial spaces
- Applying insecticidal sprays or fogging in high-activity areas
- Removing breeding sources such as compost, drains, or decaying matter
A pest control expert can assess the type of fly and suggest the most effective approach, particularly for recurring or large-scale infestations.

We contacted The Pest Company on a day when we first saw wasps in our soffits/roof and they were really friendly and efficient. A couple of days later they were at our house and dealt with the issue. However, as we were out on the day they came they couldn't have access to any interior areas. This long 'story' is basically to say that, when we noticed that there was still an issue and told them, they were equally as quick, efficient and professional as before and sorted the interior issue extremely quickly. We couldn't praise and thank them enough. Connor (who was their representative) was an extremely polite, efficient and knowledgeable guy and he, 100%, sorted things for us quickly. Again, we can't thank and praise him enough.Posted on Google![]()

Frequently asked questions
What are the signs of a fly infestation in your home or business?
Signs of a fly infestation are hard to miss once you know what to look for. Here’s what to watch out for in your home or business:
Frequent fly activity: Seeing adult flies buzzing around food areas, waste bins, or windows. Different species prefer different spots — house flies love kitchens, while drain flies typically appear in bathrooms and sinks.
Clusters of flies: Groups of sluggish flies on windowsills, loft spaces, or light fittings (especially in autumn) often point to cluster flies.
Maggots or larvae: Finding maggots in food waste, drains, or carcasses indicates breeding is already happening nearby. Blue bottles for instance can be a sign of an underlying rodent infestation.
Dark spots or “fly specks”: Tiny dark marks on walls, ceilings, or light fittings — these are fly droppings, especially near feeding or resting areas.
Unpleasant odours: Decaying organic matter, blocked drains, or dead rodents can attract flies and create a noticeable smell.
Professional pest control ensures both the adults and breeding sources are eliminated. Understanding the species and its biology cant help target the source of the problem
Are flies a risk to humans?
Yes, some flies can pose a significant health risk to humans. While they may seem like a minor nuisance, many species are known to spread harmful bacteria and pathogens.
Flies frequently land on decaying organic matter, waste, and animal faeces before visiting food preparation surfaces or food itself. This behaviour can transmit diseases such as E. coli and Salmonella, which can cause food poisoning, diarrhoea, and other gastrointestinal illnesses.
In commercial settings — especially food production, catering, and healthcare environments — a fly infestation can also lead to regulatory breaches, reputational damage, and lost business.
Professional control and good hygiene practices are essential to prevent contamination and safeguard both public health and brand integrity.
What is the most effective way to get rid of flies?
Step one is to identify the species causing the problem.
The most effective way to eliminate a fly infestation is to combine professional pest control treatments with environmental management. Simply spraying visible flies may offer short-term relief, but it rarely tackles the source of the flies.
A thorough approach should include:
Source identification and removal – Locating and removing breeding sites such as food waste, blocked drains, or dead rodents is the first step.
Targeted treatment – Professional technicians use residual insecticides, fly baits, and ULV (ultra-low volume) fogging to control adult flies and larvae safely and effectively.
Exclusion and proofing – Installing fly screens, door curtains helps prevent flies entering buildings.
Hygiene and waste management – Maintaining clean surfaces, sealed bins, and good drainage prevents future breeding conditions.
For ongoing protection, many businesses also implement routine fly-control programmes, including monitoring units such as electric fly killers (EFKs) and regular EFK analysis.
A tailored, professional treatment plan is the only way to ensure full eradication and long-term prevention.
Can I prevent fly infestations without chemicals?
Yes — in some cases, fly infestations can be prevented without relying on chemical treatments. Prevention is primarily about sanitation, exclusion, and maintenance.
Here are the most effective non-chemical strategies:
Hygiene management:
Keep kitchens, food storage areas, and waste zones clean and dry.
Empty bins regularly and use tight-fitting lids.
Clean up food and drink spills immediately.
Structural proofing:
Fit fly screens on windows and doors.
Seal cracks, vents, and gaps where flies may enter or breed.
Drain and waste control:
Regularly flush and scrub drains to prevent organic build-up.
Store waste away from entrances and food preparation areas.
Physical control methods:
Use UV fly control units or fly traps as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) programme.
While chemical treatments can be necessary for active infestations, long-term prevention is most effective when these non-chemical measures are consistently applied and monitored.
How long does fly pest control take to work?
The time it takes for fly pest control to work depends on the type of treatment, extent of infestation, and fly species involved, but in most cases, results are noticeable very quickly.
Professional spray or fogging treatments usually begin killing adult flies within a few hours.
Residual insecticides continue working for several weeks, ensuring any newly emerged flies are also eliminated.
For large or persistent infestations, especially where breeding sites are hidden (such as drains or roof voids), complete eradication can take repeat treatments over a number of weeks to target all life stages.
In some instances, ongoing physical control measures may be needed, such as continued used of electric fly killers in commercial settings. Common Cluster flies for example, may required annual treatments to keep on top of them.
Consistent results rely on both the treatment and the environmental hygiene that follows it.
