What Kind of Moths Are a Problem?
There are around 2,500 species of moth in the UK, but only a handful are considered pests. They cause problems by damaging fabrics and stored food products.
The main offenders when it comes to fabrics are;
- Common Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)
- Case-Bearing Clothes Moth (Tinea pellionella)
- Brown House Moth (Hofmannophila pseudospretella)
The main stored food pests are;
- White shouldered House Moth (Endrosis sarcitrella)
- Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)
- Mediterranean Flour Moth (Ephestia kuehniella)
Though adult moths are harmless, their larvae feed on natural fibres and food products—causing real damage in homes and businesses alike. Infestations often go unnoticed until costly damage is done.
In commercial food and textile environments, infestations can pose major hygiene and financial risks.

Damage Caused by Moths
Moths can cause costly damage in both homes and businesses. Their larvae, not the adult moths, are responsible for most of the destruction.
Typical damage includes:
- Holes in clothing, carpets and soft furnishings
- Contamination of stored dry food products like flour, rice and cereal
- Damage to upholstery and curtains
- Destruction of natural fibres such as wool, silk and cotton
- Infestations spreading unnoticed in dark, undisturbed areas
Moth infestations can build up quickly if not addressed, particularly in warm, humid environments. Early action is key.
How to Get Rid of Moths
Moth infestations can be difficult to tackle, especially when they spread through stored clothes or food. Effective removal usually requires a combination of methods.
Common treatment methods include:
- Use of insecticide sprays or foggers designed for targeting moths
- Pheromone traps to reduce numbers and monitor activity
- Vacuuming infested areas thoroughly, including carpets and wardrobes
- Freezing or heat-treating affected clothing or textiles
- Removing infested food and cleaning cupboards with vinegar-based cleaners
Not every method works in every situation. A pest control professional will recommend the most effective approach. Multiple treatments are often needed to fully control the problem.

We contacted The Pest Company on a day when we first saw wasps in our soffits/roof and they were really friendly and efficient. A couple of days later they were at our house and dealt with the issue. However, as we were out on the day they came they couldn't have access to any interior areas. This long 'story' is basically to say that, when we noticed that there was still an issue and told them, they were equally as quick, efficient and professional as before and sorted the interior issue extremely quickly. We couldn't praise and thank them enough. Connor (who was their representative) was an extremely polite, efficient and knowledgeable guy and he, 100%, sorted things for us quickly. Again, we can't thank and praise him enough.Posted on Google![]()

Frequently asked questions
What are the common signs of a moth infestation in the UK?
Typical signs include small holes in clothing or fabrics, larvae cases or silken tubes in wardrobes, damaged carpets or upholstery, and adult moths flying in dark, undisturbed areas. Food moths may also leave webbing or larvae in dry food products.
Do moths pose a health risk or are they just a nuisance?
Moths are not known to spread diseases, but their larvae can cause significant damage to textiles and contaminate stored food products. In commercial settings, this can lead to hygiene concerns and financial losses.
What is the most effective treatment for getting rid of clothes moths and food moths?
Effective treatment often combines insecticide sprays, pheromone traps, and thorough cleaning. In some cases, freezing or heat/steam treating infested textiles, along with removing contaminated food, is necessary. A pest control professional can tailor the best approach for your situation.
Are moth treatments safe for people, pets, and belongings?
Yes. Our treatments are designed to be safe, effective, and targeted. We use professional-grade products that are applied only in a way that minimise any risk to your people pets, and belongings. Not all products work in every setting, but after a full risk assessment we can provide a treatment plan that is both effective and safe.
Can moths be prevented from coming back?
Absolutely — prevention is just as important as treatment. We recommend:
Storing clothes in sealed containers or garment bags
Regular vacuuming, especially in dark corners and under furniture
Storing dry foods in airtight containers.
- Rotating food stock and not storing more than is necessary. Therefore reducing the time that a product can become infested.
How much does moth control cost?
The cost of moth pest control depends on the type of moth, the size of the property, and the severity of the infestation. In most cases, more than one visit is required to fully break the breeding cycle.
An initial survey is likely required to assess the infestation. We’ll then provide you with a clear quote and treatment plan so there are no surprises.
