Rising Rat Problems in York: Why Calls Spike Every Autumn
As autumn arrives in North Yorkshire, The Pest Company has noticed a sharp increase in rat control callouts across York. Over the past few weeks, more homeowners and businesses have been contacting us about scratching noises in lofts, droppings in kitchens, and sightings of rats in gardens and outbuildings. If you’ve searched for “rat control York” or “get rid of rats fast,” you’re not alone — York is seeing a seasonal spike in rodent activity.
Why York Homes See More Rats in Autumn
When temperatures drop, rats and other rodents head indoors in search of warmth and food. Older York properties, with their Victorian drains, terrace-style builds, and riverside locations, provide plenty of opportunities for rodents to squeeze in. Common entry points we’re seeing on recent jobs include:
Broken or uncapped drains around city centre homes
Gaps under doors and external pipework in suburban estates
Access into lofts and roof spaces via damaged tiles
What Our Customers in York Are Experiencing
Our pest control team has recently attended multiple infestations in areas like Clifton, Fulford, and Acomb. Homeowners report:
Scratching at night in walls or lofts
Droppings in cupboards or utility rooms
Chewed wires and food packaging
Pets acting strangely, alerting to hidden rodents
These are classic signs that it’s time to call in professional pest control before the problem escalates.
Why DIY Rat Control Often Doesn’t Work
Local DIY efforts — traps, bait, or over-the-counter poisons — may clear a few rats, but they rarely solve the source. Many York infestations we’re seeing this autumn are linked to drain systems. Without a professional survey, the rodents simply reappear. Our rat control York service includes:
Full property and drain inspection
Safe, targeted treatment
Proofing to prevent re-entry
Protecting Your Property This Autumn
Whether you’re near the River Ouse or in a rural village such as Haxby or Strensall, , the risk of rats increases every autumn. With callouts already rising this year, it’s the ideal time to act fast if you suspect an infestation.
