PROBLEM WITH SILVERFISH IN YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS? CALL US TODAY
What Kind of Silverfish are a Problem?
The most common type of silverfish found in UK homes and businesses is the common silverfish (Lepisma saccharina). These small, wingless insects thrive in dark, damp environments such as bathrooms, kitchens, lofts, and storage areas.
Other less frequent but still troublesome species include the gray silverfish (Ctenolepisma longicaudata) and the four-lined silverfish (Ctenolepisma quadriseriata). While all silverfish look very similar, they share the same destructive habits — feeding on paper, cardboard, books, wallpaper paste, fabrics, and even food debris.
Because silverfish are nocturnal and fast-moving, infestations often go unnoticed until visible signs of damage appear, such as holes in paper or fraying textiles. Any of these silverfish species can quickly become a nuisance if left untreated, making professional silverfish pest control the most effective way to fully eliminate the problem.
Although silverfish do not bite or spread disease, they are considered a nuisance pest due to the damage they cause to paper, fabrics, and other materials high in starch. Their presence often indicates underlying moisture or ventilation problems.
There are no specific legal requirements for silverfish control in the UK. However, persistent infestations may breach hygiene standards in rented or commercial properties, particularly where damp issues are present.

Damage Caused by Silverfish
Silverfish feed on starchy and sugary materials, making them a serious threat to both household belongings and commercial stock. These pests are notorious for silently causing gradual but significant damage to items stored in damp, dark areas.
Common types of damage include:
- Holes in books, papers, wallpaper, and photographs
- Damage to clothing, upholstery, and curtains
- Contamination of food packaging and dry goods
- Cardboard and packaging, glues and business records.
- Signs of moulting (shed skins) and pepper-like droppings
Though they may go unnoticed for some time, silverfish can become a persistent problem if left untreated. Early action helps prevent long-term damage.
How to Get Rid of Silverfish
Silverfish can be difficult to control without addressing the source of the problem—usually excess moisture.
Effective control methods include:
- Identifying and fixing damp or condensation issues
- Improving ventilation in problem areas
- Using insecticidal sprays or dusts in cracks and crevices
- Placing silverfish traps to monitor activity
- Removing clutter, old papers, and cardboard storage
A pest control professional can provide advice and treatment tailored to your property. Full eradication often involves a combination of environmental changes and targeted treatments.

We contacted The Pest Company on a day when we first saw wasps in our soffits/roof and they were really friendly and efficient. A couple of days later they were at our house and dealt with the issue. However, as we were out on the day they came they couldn't have access to any interior areas. This long 'story' is basically to say that, when we noticed that there was still an issue and told them, they were equally as quick, efficient and professional as before and sorted the interior issue extremely quickly. We couldn't praise and thank them enough. Connor (who was their representative) was an extremely polite, efficient and knowledgeable guy and he, 100%, sorted things for us quickly. Again, we can't thank and praise him enough.Posted on Google![]()
